André Gide by Van Meter Ames Cover Designed by Alvin Lustig
The cover was designed by Alvin Lustig, who along with Saul Bass, was a charter member of the The Los Angeles Society for Contemporary Designers. Lustig was known for his modern, graphic design, as well as interiors and signage he designed for Phillip Johnson. Van Meter Ames talk abouts Gide as a humanist of the scientific type, and stresses the relation between a scientific outlook and liberal political views. The beautiful jacket has some minor wear and tear, but still a fine example of mid-century modern graphic design.
